TIPPING POINTS FOR CHORAL PARTICIPATION:
MOTIVATION FOR CHORAL LEISURE PURSUITS ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
My research is focused on lifelong musicianship and specifically motivation for engaging in music making at different stages of life. My PhD explores the lived experiences of choral singers at tipping points in their singing where they decide to continue or discontinue when circumstances change in their personal or educational lives.
The PhD comprises five studies which begin by building connections within theories of motivation and leisure. I then continue with three studies which examine the experiences of choral singers when they begin school instruction, when they end secondary school instruction, and at various tipping points throughout their adult lives. These studies are currently in progress but are laid out below.
Theory Building
I. Systematic Review of the Literature on Motivation to Participate in Music Activities
II. ‘Serious Leisure’ in Music: Participation that Supports Basic Psychological Needs
Lived Experiences of Choral Singers
III. When Singing Becomes Elective: Experiences, Motivations, and Intentions of Middle School Singers
IV. Graduation as a Tipping Point: Experiences, Motivations, and Intentions of Year 12 Singers
V. Leisure Participation in Adulthood: Motivations for Engaging in Choral Singing
